Definition

The British Raj refers to the period of British colonial rule in India from 1858 to 1947. During this time, Britain had direct control over India and influenced its political, economic, and social structures.

Analogy

Think of the British Raj as a strict school principal who takes over a school (India) and changes all the rules according to their own preferences. This principal stays in charge for a long time (nearly 90 years), significantly altering how the school operates.
