Definition

The Algerian War of Independence was a conflict from 1954 to 1962 between France and the National Liberation Front (FLN) that resulted in Algeria gaining its independence from French colonial rule.

Analogy

Think of the Algerian War of Independence as a long, grueling football match. Algeria is the underdog team fighting against the reigning champion, France. After many years (or quarters), Algeria finally scores enough points to win their freedom, or in this case, their independence.
