Population Proportions

Definition

Population proportions refer to the proportion or percentage of a specific characteristic or attribute within an entire population.

Analogy

Imagine you have a bag of 100 candies, and you want to know what percentage of them are red. The population proportion would be the actual percentage of red candies in the entire bag.

Sample Proportions: Sample proportions are estimates calculated from data collected from a smaller subset, or sample, of a larger population.

Standard Error: Standard error measures how much variation exists between different samples taken from the same population and provides an estimate for how accurate our statistic (e.g., mean or proportion) is likely to be compared to the true population parameter.

Confidence Interval: A confidence interval is a range of values within which we can reasonably estimate the true population proportion with a certain level of confidence.
