Unwanted repetitive thoughts, also known as obsessions, are persistent and intrusive thoughts or mental images that cause distress and anxiety. These thoughts often feel uncontrollable and irrational.
In response to the unwanted repetitive thoughts (obsessions), individuals may engage in behaviors or mental acts called compulsions. These are repetitive actions or rituals performed to alleviate anxiety caused by the obsessions.
Unwanted repetitive thoughts can be a symptom of various anxiety disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).
Similar to unwanted repetitive thoughts, intrusive thoughts are unwelcome and involuntary thoughts that can be disturbing or distressing. They often involve violent, inappropriate, or taboo content.
