Therapeutic Alliance

Definition

Therapeutic alliance refers to the collaborative relationship between a therapist and their client, where both work together to achieve the client's therapeutic goals.

Analogy

Think of the therapeutic alliance as a team in a relay race. The therapist and client are teammates, passing the baton (information, trust, goals) back and forth to each other. They need to cooperate and understand each other well to win the race (achieve therapeutic goals).
