Definition

The survey method is a research technique that involves asking many participants a fixed set of questions about their attitudes, beliefs, behaviors, or characteristics.

Analogy

Imagine survey method like taking a poll at school. You ask all students from different grades about their favorite subject. Their answers give you an overall picture (data) about which subject is most popular among students.

Related terms

Population: In research terms, this refers to the entire group that researchers are interested in - for example all high school students in a country.

Sample: A subset selected from a larger population for study. For example, 1000 high school students randomly selected from across the country would be your sample if you're studying all high school students nationwide.

Questionnaire: A written set of questions used in surveys to gather information from respondents.
