Definition

A pattern of repeated use leading to significant impairment or distress over 12 months including health problems, disability, failure to meet responsibilities at work/school/home etc., due to substance usage.

Analogy

Substance use disorder is like a car with failing brakes. The person wants to stop, but the faulty system (in this case, their brain's reward system) prevents them from doing so effectively.
