Substance Abuse Disorders

Definition

Substance abuse disorders are mental health conditions that involve an excessive use of a substance or substances, leading to significant impairment or distress.

Analogy

Think of substance abuse disorders like a car with bad brakes. The driver (the person) may want to stop using the substance (press the brake), but the faulty system (the disorder) makes it difficult to do so, causing potential harm and damage.

Related terms

Dependence: This is when a person relies on a drug or alcohol to function normally. Without the substance, they may experience withdrawal symptoms.

Tolerance: This refers to needing more and more of a substance over time in order to achieve the same effect. It's like needing more gas for your car as it gets older and less efficient.

Withdrawal: This is the body's response when a dependent person stops taking a drug. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe, life-threatening conditions. It's like going cold turkey after being used to having turkey every day!
