Somatogenic refers to physical causes for mental disorders, as opposed to psychogenic causes which originate from psychological experiences or stressors.
Think about how a computer works - sometimes it malfunctions because there’s an issue with its software (like a virus), but other times it’s due to hardware problems (like a broken hard drive). In this analogy, somatogenic disorders would be like hardware problems – they’re caused by physical issues in the body.
Psychogenic: Refers to symptoms that originate from mental or emotional causes rather than physical ones.
Biopsychosocial Model: A model that suggests biological, psychological, and social factors all play significant roles in human functioning in disease or illness.
Neurotransmitters: Chemicals within the brain that transmit signals from one neuron to another. Imbalances in neurotransmitters can lead to somatogenic disorders.
