Semantic refers to meaning or comprehension. In psychology, semantic relates specifically to understanding symbols, language, and meaning-making processes in communication.
Semantic understanding is like being able to read a map. You understand what different symbols represent (like roads or landmarks) and can make sense out of them to navigate your way.
Semantic Memory: A type of explicit memory that includes a broad base of facts and knowledge about the world that is not tied to personal experience.
Semantic Encoding: The process of encoding sensory input that has particular meaning or can be applied to a context.
Semantic Network: A network that represents semantic relations between concepts; this is how ideas spread from one concept to another.
