Rorschach Inkblot Test

Definition

The Rorschach Inkblot Test is a projective psychological test consisting of 10 inkblots printed on cards (five in black and white, five in color) designed to measure thought disorder for the purpose of identifying mental disorders.

Analogy

Imagine you spill some paint on a canvas. Different people might see different things in that random pattern of paint. Some might see a butterfly, others might see a face. What they see isn't really there; it's what their mind projects onto the random pattern. That's how the Rorschach Inkblot Test works - by interpreting what individuals see in inkblots, psychologists can gain insight into their thoughts and feelings.
