The resistance phase is the second stage of the General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS), where the body attempts to resist or adapt to the stressor through continued activation of physiological responses.
Consider this phase as studying for a big test. At first it’s overwhelming (alarm phase), but then you settle into a rhythm - maybe pulling an all-nighter - trying to absorb all information (resistance phase).
Cortisol: A steroid hormone released by the adrenal glands during long-term stress which helps maintain steady supplies of blood sugar necessary for extended periods of effort.
Homeostasis: The tendency toward a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, particularly as maintained by physiological processes.
Chronic Stress: Stress that occurs on a routine basis that can lead to long-term health issues such as heart disease and mental illness.
