Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)

Definition

rTMS is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression.

Analogy

Think of rTMS like a remote control for your TV. Just as you can change channels or adjust the volume without physically touching the TV, rTMS can influence certain areas of your brain without needing surgery or implants.

Related terms

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT): A procedure, done under general anesthesia, in which small electric currents are passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure and causing changes in brain chemistry that can quickly reverse symptoms of certain mental health conditions.

Neurofeedback: A type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of brain activity—most commonly electroencephalography (EEG)—to teach self-regulation of brain function.
