Reinforcement Schedules

Definition

Reinforcement schedules are rules that control the delivery of reinforcement. They can be based on time intervals or ratios of responses and can be either fixed (predictable) or variable (unpredictable).

Fixed Ratio Schedule: A reinforcement schedule where response is reinforced only after a specified number of responses.

Variable Interval Schedule: A reinforcement schedule where response is rewarded after an unpredictable amount of time has passed.

Continuous Reinforcement Schedule: Every occurrence of the operant response results in delivery of the reinforcer.
