Reality Principle

Definition

The reality principle refers to the ability of the mind to assess the reality of the external world, and act upon it accordingly, as opposed to acting on desires or fears.

Analogy

Imagine you're really hungry while studying at home but your favorite pizza place doesn't deliver. The reality principle would be like your brain telling you "Hey, I know you want pizza but we can't have it right now. Let's find something else in the kitchen."
