Reaction Formation

Definition

Reaction formation is a defense mechanism where an individual acts in a manner opposite to their actual feelings to keep their true feelings hidden.

Analogy

Think of reaction formation like wearing a costume at Halloween. You might be scared of vampires, but you dress up as one anyway. It's not because you want to be a vampire, but it's easier to pretend than confront your fear.
