This is a form of dependence that involves emotional–mental withdrawal symptoms, such as anxiety and depression, upon cessation of the drug.
Think of psychological dependence like being emotionally attached to your favorite blanket. You don't physically need it to survive, but without it, you might feel anxious or uncomfortable.
Addiction: A chronic disease characterized by drug seeking and use that is compulsive, despite harmful consequences.
Withdrawal: The discomfort and distress that follow discontinuing an addictive drug or behavior.
Craving: A powerful desire for something, especially drugs in the context of addiction.
