Memory interference occurs when information competes with other information causing us either not being able to remember new information (proactive interference) or old information (retroactive interference).
Imagine your mind as an overstuffed closet. If you keep cramming more clothes (information) into it without organizing, you might struggle to find the shirt (information) you need later. This is memory interference.
Proactive Interference: The disruptive effect of prior learning on the recall of new information.
Retroactive Interference: The disruptive effect of new learning on the recall of old information.
Decay Theory: A theory that proposes that memory fades due to the mere passage of time. Information is therefore less available for later retrieval as time passes and memory, as well as memory strength, wears away.
