Intellectualization is a defense mechanism where reasoning is used to block confrontation with an unconscious conflict and its associated emotional stress.
Think of intellectualization as your brain's lawyer. When you're faced with a stressful situation, this "lawyer" steps in to argue the case logically and analytically, avoiding any emotional distress that might come from confronting the issue directly.
Rationalization: This is another defense mechanism where controversial behaviors or feelings are justified and explained in a seemingly rational or logical manner to avoid the true explanation.
Denial: This is a psychological defense mechanism in which confrontation with a personal problem or with reality is avoided by denying the existence of the problem or reality.
Projection: This refers to unconsciously taking unwanted emotions or traits you don't like about yourself and attributing them to someone else.
