General Stages

Definition

Developmental psychologists recognize three general stages of adulthood: early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. These stages are based on age ranges and are associated with distinct psychological and social changes.

This stage typically spans from the late teens to the early thirties when individuals establish their independence, make important life choices, and pursue educational or career goals.

Middle Adulthood:

This stage usually occurs between the forties and sixties when individuals experience increased responsibilities, such as raising children or managing careers. They also undergo physical changes associated with aging.

Late Adulthood:

This stage begins around the seventies onward and is characterized by retirement, potential decline in health or physical abilities, as well as opportunities for reflection on life accomplishments.
