Definition

The Atkinson-Shiffrin model is a widely accepted theoretical framework that describes the three main stages of human memory processing - sensory memory, short-term memory (working memory), and long-term memory. According to this model, information flows through these stages sequentially in order for it to be encoded, stored temporarily, and eventually transferred into long-term storage.
