Potential Difference

Definition

Potential difference, also known as voltage, is the difference in electric potential energy per unit charge between two points in an electric circuit. It represents how much work is done on each unit of charge when it moves from one point to another.

Analogy

Think of potential difference like water flowing down from a higher elevation to a lower elevation through pipes. The greater the height difference between two points, the more work can be done by each unit of water as it flows down.

Related terms

Electric Current: It is the flow of electric charge through a conductor or circuit.

Resistance: Resistance measures how much opposition there is for current flow in an electrical circuit.

Ohm's Law: Ohm's Law states that the current flowing through a conductor is directly proportional to the voltage across it and inversely proportional to its resistance.
