Fnet, ext

Definition

Fnet, ext refers to the net external force acting on an object. It is the vector sum of all the external forces acting on an object.

Analogy

Imagine you are playing a game of tug-of-war with your friends. The net external force is like the combined strength and direction of all your friends pulling in one direction, while any internal forces (like you pushing against your own teammates) cancel out and do not contribute to the net force.

Related terms

Newton's Second Law: This law states that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net external force applied to it and inversely proportional to its mass.

Frictional Force: This is a type of external force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.

Normal Force: The normal force is an external force exerted by a surface perpendicular to the contact point with an object.
