Definition
The upbeat is the last beat of a musical measure that leads into the downbeat of the next measure. It has less emphasis compared to downbeats.
Analogy
Think of a race where runners take small steps during each upbeat and then push off with power during each downbeat. The upbeats represent their preparation for taking off, while the downbeats symbolize their explosive strides.
