Seventh chords are four-note chords consisting of a triad (three notes stacked in thirds) and an additional note called the seventh. They add richness and tension to music.
Imagine you're making a pizza with three toppings - cheese, pepperoni, and mushrooms. Now, imagine adding another topping like olives on top of it. The olives represent the seventh note added to the triad, giving it more flavor just like how seventh chords add complexity to music.
Dominant Seventh Chord: A type of seventh chord built on the fifth scale degree that has a strong pull towards resolving to the tonic.
Major Seventh Chord: A type of seventh chord built on the first scale degree that has a smooth and dreamy sound.
Minor Seventh Chord: A type of seventh chord built on the first scale degree but with a lowered third which gives it a melancholic quality.
