Harmonic value refers to the importance or significance of a particular chord within a musical context. It determines how chords function and contribute to the overall harmonic structure of a piece.
Think of harmonic value as the role each character plays in a movie. Just as some characters have more impact on the plot than others, certain chords have more influence on the overall sound and direction of a musical composition.
Tonic: The tonic is the most stable and central pitch or chord in a key. It has high harmonic value and provides a sense of resolution.
Dominant: The dominant is the fifth scale degree or chord in a key. It has strong harmonic value and creates tension that resolves back to the tonic.
Subdominant: The subdominant is the fourth scale degree or chord in a key. It has moderate harmonic value and serves as an intermediary between the tonic and dominant chords.
