Doubling rules

Definition

Doubling rules are guidelines that determine which note should be doubled when voicing chords. They help maintain proper voice leading and balance between the different voices.

Analogy

Think of doubling rules as a seating arrangement at a dinner party. Just like you want to distribute guests evenly around the table, doubling rules ensure that each voice in a chord has an appropriate role and doesn't overpower others.
