Definition

Background knowledge refers to information and experiences that individuals have acquired prior to encountering new information. It shapes their understanding and interpretation of new ideas or concepts.

Analogy

Think of background knowledge as building blocks for learning. Just like you need a strong foundation before adding more layers to a tower made out of blocks, having relevant background knowledge helps us make connections between new ideas and what we already know.

Schema: Mental frameworks or structures that help us organize our knowledge about a particular topic or concept.

Prior Learning: Previous educational experiences or exposure to certain subjects that contribute to one's existing knowledge base.
