Definition

A faction is a group, usually within a larger group, that has different ideas and opinions than the rest of the group.

Analogy

Think of factions as different fan clubs within a school. Each club supports different teams (ideas), but they all belong to the same school (larger group).

Related terms

Partisanship: This refers to strong support for one's own political party and its policies; it's like being part of a sports team and always cheering for them no matter what.

Interest Group: These are organized groups that aim to influence public policy. They're similar to advocacy groups campaigning for specific causes.

Political Polarization: This is when public opinion divides and goes towards extreme ends. Imagine two friends who start with slight disagreements but end up on completely opposite sides after heated debates.
