Definition
The Department of Defense oversees everything related to security and defense in America. This includes managing all branches of military service (Army, Navy, Air Force), developing military strategies, procuring weapons systems etc.
Analogy
Consider it as your home security system but on a much larger scale. Just like how your security system protects you from intruders or alerts you about potential threats; this department ensures national safety against any external threats.
