The ACLU is a non-profit organization founded in 1920 that works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.
Think of the ACLU as a referee in a football game. Just like how referees ensure all players follow the rules, the ACLU ensures that government actions comply with constitutional rights. If there's a foul on play (a violation of civil liberties), they'll throw their flag (file lawsuits) to challenge it.
1st Amendment: This is part of the Bill of Rights that protects freedoms including speech, assembly, and worship.
Civil Rights: These are an individual's protections against infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals. They ensure one's ability to participate in civil and political life without discrimination or repression.
Due Process Clause: A clause in the U.S Constitution that acts as a safeguard from arbitrary denial of life, liberty, or property by the Government outside the sanction of law.
