Oxidation-Reduction Reactions

Definition

These reactions involve transfer of electrons between chemical species. The substance losing electrons is being oxidized while the one gaining electrons is being reduced.

Analogy

Consider this as passing notes in class. One student has too many notes (the oxidized substance) and gives some to another student who doesn't have enough (the reduced substance).

Redox Potential: The tendency of a chemical species to acquire electrons and thereby be reduced.

Oxidizing Agent: A substance that has the ability to oxidize other substances, meaning it causes them to lose electrons.

Reducing Agent: A substance that has the ability to reduce other substances, meaning it causes them to gain electrons.
