Net Ionic Equation

Definition

The net ionic equation represents only those components involved directly in the chemical reaction, excluding spectator ions. It shows what happens chemically when reactants turn into products.

Analogy

Consider net ionic equations as the highlight reel of a sports game. Just like the highlight reel only shows the key plays that affected the outcome of the game, a net ionic equation only includes the ions that participate in the reaction.

Related terms

Spectator Ions: Ions that do not participate directly in a chemical reaction and remain unchanged.

Precipitation Reaction: A type of chemical reaction where two soluble salts react to form an insoluble salt (precipitate) and a soluble salt.

Balanced Equation: An equation for a chemical reaction in which the number of atoms for each element in the reaction and the total charge are same on both sides.
