Definition

Hydrogen chloride refers to a compound formed when hydrogen gas reacts with chlorine gas. It consists of one hydrogen atom and one chlorine atom (HCl) bonded together. Hydrogen chloride is a colorless, corrosive gas with a sharp odor.
