key term - Elephant's Toothpaste Reaction

Definition

This is a popular science experiment that demonstrates the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide when it is mixed with dish soap and a catalyst, usually potassium iodide or yeast. The reaction produces a large amount of oxygen gas and heat, causing the soap to foam up and create what looks like giant toothpaste fit for an elephant.
