Chloride is an ion that carries a negative charge (anion) and is formed when the element chlorine gains an electron.
Think of chloride like a magnet. Just as magnets have a negative pole, chloride has a negative charge. And just like magnets attract positive poles, chloride attracts positively charged ions in chemical reactions.
Anion: An ion with more electrons than protons, giving it a net negative charge.
Electron Affinity: The amount of energy released or spent when an electron is added to a neutral atom to form a negatively charged ion.
Halogen: Any element in group 17 of the periodic table which includes fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine. They are known for their ability to gain electrons and form negative ions.
