Anode

Definition

The anode is the electrode where oxidation occurs in a chemical reaction. It's the site where electrons are lost.

Analogy

Think of the anode as a generous friend who always gives away their stuff (in this case, electrons). Just like your friend might end up with less stuff after giving things away, the anode loses electrons during oxidation.

Related terms

Oxidation: This is a process that involves losing electrons. In other words, it's when our generous friend (the anode) gives away their stuff (electrons).

Electrode: This is a conductor through which electricity enters or leaves an object, substance, or region. The anode and cathode are both types of electrodes.

Redox Reaction: A type of chemical reaction that involves a transfer of electrons between two species. Our generous friend (the anode) giving away their stuff (electrons) to another friend (the cathode) is part of this process.
