Reaction Rates

Definition

Reaction rates refer to the speed at which a chemical reaction takes place. It measures how quickly reactants are consumed or products are formed.

Analogy

Imagine a race between two cars. The reaction rate is like the speed at which one car overtakes the other. A faster reaction rate means one car passes the other quickly, while a slower reaction rate means it takes longer for one car to overtake the other.

Related terms

Rate Laws: Rate laws describe the mathematical relationship between the concentration of reactants and the rate of a chemical reaction.

Activation Energy: Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to occur.

Catalysts: Catalysts are substances that increase the rate of a chemical reaction by lowering its activation energy.
