Weber test

Definition

The Weber test is a quick screening test for hearing that uses a tuning fork to evaluate sound conduction through bone versus air. It helps in identifying unilateral (one-sided) conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss by comparing perception of sound in both ears.

Conductive hearing loss: Occurs when there is a problem conducting sound waves anywhere along the pathway from the outer ear to the inner ear, including the eardrum and ossicles.

Sensorineural hearing loss: A type of hearing loss resulting from damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain
