Definition

Peripheral chemoreceptors are specialized sensory receptors located in the carotid bodies and aortic bodies that detect changes in blood oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH levels. They play a crucial role in regulating respiratory rate by sending signals to the brainstem to adjust breathing based on blood gas composition.
