Definition

The papillary layer is the uppermost layer of the dermis, directly beneath the epidermis, composed of loose connective tissue that houses blood vessels, sensory neurons, and lymphatic vessels. It is characterized by its finger-like projections called papillae, which increase the surface area for nutrient exchange and attachment between the dermis and epidermis.
