Definition

Lysozyme is an enzyme found in the secretions of leukocytes (white blood cells) and platelets that destroys the cell walls of certain bacteria, contributing to the body's defense system against infection. It acts by breaking down the polysaccharides present in bacterial cell walls, leading to osmotic imbalance and cell lysis.
