Definition

The levator ani is a broad, thin muscle group situated on either side of the pelvis, functioning primarily to support the pelvic viscera (organs) and maintain continence as part of the pelvic floor. It consists of three muscles: the pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus, and puborectalis.
