Definition

The glossopharyngeal nerve is the ninth cranial nerve (CN IX) that is involved in swallowing, taste, and the sensation of the back third of the tongue, as well as contributing to blood pressure regulation. It innervates both motor and sensory functions in the throat (pharynx), including salivary glands and baroreceptors of the carotid artery.
