Definition
The epiglottis is a leaf-shaped flap of cartilage located behind the tongue, at the top of the larynx. Its primary function is to seal off the windpipe during swallowing, to prevent food from entering the airways.
The larynx, or voice box, is an organ in the top of the neck involved in breathing, producing sound, and protecting the trachea against food aspiration.
Also known as the windpipe, it is a tube that connects the pharynx and larynx to the lungs, allowing for air passage.
