Anhedonia is a psychological condition characterized by the inability to experience pleasure or enjoyment in activities that typically bring joy. It is a core symptom often associated with mood disorders, especially major depressive disorder and persistent depressive disorder, where individuals may feel a pervasive sense of emptiness or disinterest. This term also has implications in understanding the etiology, course, and treatment of mood disorders, as well as in recognizing certain subtypes of schizophrenia where anhedonia can manifest as a negative symptom.
