Tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) are immune cells that have migrated into a tumor and are believed to play a critical role in the immune response against cancer. These lymphocytes, primarily consisting of T cells, indicate the presence of an ongoing immune response to tumor antigens, which are abnormal proteins expressed by cancer cells. The interaction between TILs and tumor cells is vital for the concept of immune surveillance, where the immune system identifies and targets malignant cells.
