What's Light Anyway?

• Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that travels in waves and consists of photons
• Visible light represents a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths between approximately 380 and 700 nanometers
  • Other parts of the spectrum include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays
• Light exhibits properties of both waves and particles, known as the wave-particle duality
• The speed of light in a vacuum is a constant, approximately 299,792,458 meters per second (c)
• Light can interact with matter through absorption, reflection, refraction, and scattering
• The energy of a photon is directly proportional to its frequency and inversely proportional to its wavelength, as described by the equation $E = hf = hc/\lambda$
  • $E$ is the energy of the photon
  • $h$ is Planck's constant (6.626 × 10^-34 J⋅s)
  • $f$ is the frequency of the light
  • $c$ is the speed of light

The Basics: How Light Behaves

• Light travels in straight lines in a homogeneous medium, following the principle of rectilinear propagation
• When light encounters an obstacle or a boundary between two different media, it can be reflected, refracted, or absorbed
• The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection when light is reflected from a smooth surface
• Refraction occurs when light passes from one medium to another with a different refractive index, causing the light to bend
  • The angle of refraction depends on the refractive indices of the media and is described by Snell's law: $n_1 \sin \theta_1 = n_2 \sin \theta_2$
• Light can be polarized, meaning that the electric field oscillations are restricted to a single plane
  • Polarization can occur through absorption, reflection, or scattering

Reflection: Light's Bouncy Side

• The focal length of a lens is the distance from the lens's center to the point where parallel light rays converge (for a convex lens) or appear to diverge from (for a concave lens)
