Sulcus

Definition

A sulcus is a shallow groove or furrow on the surface of the brain, marking the division between adjacent gyri (the ridges of the brain). It plays a critical role in increasing the surface area of the cerebral cortex, allowing for greater cognitive functionality and neural connections.
