Definition

The sternohyoid is a narrow, strap-like muscle located in the anterior neck that plays a vital role in depressing the hyoid bone and larynx during swallowing and speech. It extends from the sternum (breastbone) to the hyoid bone, which is situated in the lower jaw area.
